The town of Westcliff on Sea is a seaside resort located in the South East of England. It is situated on the northern shore of the Thames Estuary, between the quaint cockle fishing sheds of Old Leigh and the modern shopping plazas of Southend. The coastline has been reconstructed into fine, sandy beaches with the use of imported sand, which has transformed it into a far more desirable location. It is overlooked by the Cliffs Pavilion Theatre which is situated in Westcliff's beautiful cliff top gardens. These span over the distance of a mile and are maintained and in bloom during all seasons of the year. From the shore or cliffs on a clear day, you are able to see all the way across the estuary and to the county of Kent.
There are many ways to travel around or from the area, especially since the introduction of the railway network in the 1880's between London and Southend, which has three of its own train stations and joins two major roads; the A127 and the infamous A13. There are also regular bus routes that provide convenient travel around the local area and the rest of the county, although many of the main attractions are within walking distance; Westcliff Casino, which is the second largest casino in Britain, is less than a mile away from the train station. Other notable places include Southend Pier (the world's longest pleasure pier), the arcades, Sea-life centre and the theme park 'Adventure Island' which are only a further five minutes' walk east along the promenade.
Westcliff is a prime location for education, with over 50 schools pertaining to the catchment area which includes reputable preparatory primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities with both general and adult learning courses available. South Essex College (SEC) merged with Thurrock and Basildon College at the beginning of January 2010 and offers a vast range of further education for learners between the ages of 14-19. It has exceptional facilities and a spectacularly modern building, as well as many evening and weekend classes for mature students. Aside from this, Southend University Hospital is also only a short distance away, offering many opportunities for those interested in the medical profession as well as a 24 hour Accident and Emergency drop in centre.
The area is known for having a high level of tourism during the summer months and an exceptional nightlife throughout the year, with clubs such as Talk (formerly 'Talk of the South'), which is well-known throughout the country. Westcliff itself is home to a wide variety of places to eat ranging from Thai, Italian, Japanese and Indian restaurants to small, friendly, locally-run cafes. You will find the majority of these in and around the Hamlet Court Road area, which underwent a one million pound refurbishment at the turn of the century. Hamlet Court is the main location in Westcliff for shopping, dining and groceries as it has a wide variety of late opening convenience stores, restaurants, beauty salons and bars which are open all year long.
