Situated in the Brentwood area of Essex, the village of Pilgrims Hatch has a small population of around six thousand people. The name dates back to the twelfth century, when the area was a popular stop off for pilgrims travelling through nearby Brentwood. Those with a keen interest in history may indeed wish to visit the Thomas Becket Chapel, which is situated in Brentwood. The Pilgrims Hatch area itself is often symbolised by a farmer's gate, with the place name 'Pilgrims Hatch', deriving directly from 'Pilgrims Gate'.
The small population of Pilgrims Hatch did not really form until after the Second World War. Prior to the war, the area was chiefly just sparsely populated countryside. However, the erection of a telegraph radio receiving station and subsequent population growth, resulted in the change of status to that of a village. Indeed, the housing area of Bishops Hall Park shows traces of the air defences which were constructed to protect and defend the telegraph radio receiving station during the war.
Results from the 2001 census show Pilgrims Hatch to be a predominantly white, British area. Politically, trends show that Liberal Democrat is the party of choice. Notable areas of community interest include the Ashewell's Country Club and the increasingly popular, New Harvest Community Church. The Essex Dog Display Team heralds from Pilgrims Hatch, having been founded in the area over thirty years ago. Regulars at Royal Tournaments, the dog school has achieved critical acclaim on an international stage, having been recognised for its use of rescue dogs. However, by far the most impressive feature locally is the Brentwood Leisure Trust Centre.
The Brentwood Centre is far more than just a place where people can keep fit, as alongside the swimming facilities and gymnasium equipment, The Brentwood Centre also sports concert and exhibition capacity. Over the years many famous faces have played at the venue, including Daniel O'Donnell, Status Quo and the Sugababes. Home and Leisure Shows and Wedding Fairs regularly take place in the exhibition space, allowing residents access to a wide variety of entertainment, all on their doorstep.
A short bus ride to Brentwood High Street is all it takes for residents to get their retail fix, with many of the large supermarket and high street chains making an appearance. Although, there are sufficient local pubs and takeaways to service the immediate area.
Stansted, Heathrow, Gatwick and City airports are all within around an hour's drive from the area. The A13 and the M25 mean that Central London is a mere thirty miles away, making commuting a less than arduous task for anyone who may be working in the capital.
Pilgrims Hatch is situated less than two miles away from the beautiful Weald Country Park. With family events that run throughout the year (including a Santa's Grotto), a fallow deer enclosure at the visitors centre and the remains of the Belvedere Tower to explore, the residents of Pilgrims Hatch are lucky enough to have one of Essex's most popular parks just a stone's throw away.
