The Leasingham And District Gardening Group

The local gardening group in Leasingham organises a range of activities including horticultural shows and visits to gardens of special interest. Leasingham is a small village in the North Keveston district of the county of Lincolnshire in the East Midlands of England. There are only 713 households in the village, which is two miles North of the town of Sleaford.

The Leasingham Gardening Group has a monthly newsletter which is packed with tips on what to do with your vegetables, plants, flowers and lawn during the coming month. The newsletter also reminds the members of the group about the next meeting and the topic for that meeting. There are many interesting tips in the newsletters. Did you know that if you are stung by a wasp in the garden, you can dig up an onion and cut it in two and rub the onion juice over the stung area to reduce the swelling? Each of the monthly meetings of the Leasingham Gardening Group has a particular topic, such as working with wisteria, excellent evergreens, caring for cabbages, vanquishing vine weevils, deadheading dos and don’ts, masterful mulching, proper use of pesticides, poisonous plants, sorting out slugs, practical pruning, good groundwork, and success with soil. Once a year the Leasingham Gardening Group has its Annual General Meeting at which the members review and discuss the finances of the group, as well as its constitution, and other issues to do with the management of the group.

Sometimes a guest speaker comes along to one of the monthly meetings of the Leasingham Gardening Group to talk about a specialist subject. One was about the growing and care of orchids, presented by a specialist grower. Another meeting welcomed a speaker who is the owner of the National Hyacinth Collection, which was of great interest to the hyacinth aficionados of the Leasingham Gardening Group. Often the December meeting will have a florist or another flower arranging expert present ideas for Christmas flower arrangements.

There is also a 'sale table’ at each meeting where the members of the group bring gardening related items that they no longer need or feel that other members would benefit from. These include books, magazines, cuttings, whole plants, seeds and spare tools. People who want anything pay for them and all proceeds go to the committee funds of the Leasingham Gardening Group. There is sometimes a quiz at the monthly meeting, in which teams are made up from the members of the Leasingham Gardening Group.

The Leasingham Gardening Group welcomes new members at its monthly meetings. You don’t have to be an expert to join, the group is good fun and the aim is for a pleasant social evening with some tips and information thrown in for good measure to help everyone share the pleasure of gardening. Just pop along to the village hall in Leasingham at seven thirty in the evening on the first Thursday of each month.
