The town of Lowestoft lies in the county of Suffolk, in the UK. The harbour of the town faces the North Sea. The town is one of the most easterly within England. Lowestoft town is about 110 miles to the north east of the city of London. It is separated into two halves by Lothing Lake, which is a part of Lowestoft Harbour.
Lowestoft is generally a low lying town, however there are a number of areas in the north where there are steep hills of up to 23 metres above sea level. There are sandy beaches to the north of the town's harbour and summer temperatures reach a pleasant 22 degrees Celsius towards the end of the season.
During the late 18th century, the town was well known for its production of porcelain ware. This took place in a factory on Crown Street. Products from this factory can still be found today and there are collections in Norwich in the Castle Museum as well as in Oulton Broad and Nicholas Everett Park.
The Broads National Park reaches the town at what is known as Oulton Board. Boat tours and water activities are organised here and powerboat racing is also very popular. One day each week during the summer, local boats and some national and international competitors race here.
There are a number of theatres in Lowestoft including the Marina Theatre and in Pakefield, the Seagull Theatre. There is also a local radio station which broadcasts to the town as well as some of the surrounding areas.
Historically, Lowestoft is known as a seaside resort and has two piers named Claremont and the South Pier. There is also a theme park named Pleasurewoods Hills to the north of the town. This theme park, along with the East Anglia Transport Museum is a popular tourist attraction. The Seafront Air Festival attracts crowds of visitors every year and is held on the South Beach of the town.
There are numerous shopping areas in the town of Lowestoft. The Town Centre consists of five shopping 'districts'. Station Square has a row of smaller shops, London Road North has a much larger array of big brand stores as well as restaurants, cafes and pubs, Suffolk Road offers a mid range shopping experience, Bevan Street East has yet another batch of smaller shops and the High Street has a large shopping centre containing quite a few specialist shops as well as cafes, pubs and restaurants. Finally, to the south of the Town Centre one will find the Kirkley District shopping centre. There are also a number of retail parks in the town, including the North Quay Park, Lothingland Park as well as Tower Park. All of these offer a wide range of well known chain superstores.
In terms of leisure and recreation, Lowestoft town has plenty to offer. The leisure centre called Waterlane has been recently redeveloped and has a climbing wall, gym and swimming pool. There are also plenty of green open spaces and playgrounds in the town as well.
