As part of the central Bedfordshire district and being located in the proximity of Chiltern Hills between Milton Keynes and Luton, Leighton Buzzard is a town whose name is often related to the combination of two towns: Linslade and Leighton.
The town and civil parish has a complicated history that has not yet established a certain origin to its name; however, Leighton Buzzard is thought to be derived from the Old English language term "Leighton", which means a "clearing in the woods", while the "Buzzard" is said to have been added by the Dean of Lincoln in the 12th century.
The All Saints Church is one of the most famous Early English parish churches that date back from 1277 and that is a true landmark of the town, as well as the narrow gauge heritage railway - the Leighton Buzzard Light Railway. The Library Theatre is a rather peculiar building that hosts both a library and a theatre between its walls; a lot of live events but also film screenings are being held here periodically, so this makes for an important hot spot of the town and its people. Leighton Buzzard also features a lot of sports teams such as football team Leighton Town F.C. which plays in the Southern League Division One Midlands and Leighton Buzzard R.F.C who play Rugby Union in Midlands Division 2 East. Men's and women's hockey teams are also present here, at the Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club, plus an active running club.
