Harrow is a London Borough situated 12 miles north of Charing Cross. It is as famous as a seat of learning as for anything else, with Harrow School, one of Britain's most prestigious independent schools located here. It is possible to tour the school, walking through the halls and corridors in the footsteps of the many famous alumni including Winston Churchill and Lord Byron.
The town dates back to pre-Roman times and has many historic buildings including Bentley Priory, Grim's Dyke Hotel and Gardens, St Mary's Church and the museum, all well-preserved. The museum has both permanent displays about local history and special exhibitions and events throughout the year. The museum is in four buildings which are in the grounds of Headstone Manor. These buildings were originally part of a working farm and have a rich history dating back to medieval times. Grim's Dyke Hotel is a lavish hotel offering splendid accommodation, excellent dining and beautiful gardens, all with the history of having once been owned by W. S. Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. Not only is this building remarkable to look at, it is also renowned for musical performances by the resident opera company.
Harrow Arts Centre is home to a variety of entertainment options with theatre, music, dance, comedy and films all available under one roof. The centre includes a large auditorium, smaller theatre space, meeting rooms, art rooms and a dance studio and is a venue for entertainment or to hire for events. There is a Vue cinema and the Safari cinema in the centre of town.
