Hereward the Wake, one of the leaders of British resistance to the Norman conquest of England during the eleventh century, was born in the town of Bourne in or around the year 1035. The name Hereward is made of Old English words 'here’ for army, and 'ward’ for guard. The title 'The Wake’ means The Watcher. Hereward the Wake travelled across the Fens in East Anglia to lead opposition to William the Conqueror, who was King of England for three years, from the year 1066 to 1069.
The statesman William Cecil, First Baron Burghley and chief advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, was born in the town of Bourne in the year 1521. He has been portrayed in many novels, TV series and movies about Elizabeth. He was played by the actor Morton Selton in the movie Fire Over England that was released in the year 1937. In the year 1998 he was played by Sir David Attenborough in the movie Elizabeth. The TV series Elizabeth I was screened in the year 2005 in which Lord Burghley was played by Ian McDiarmid.
